On Saturday, former Vice President, Mike Pence dropped his bid for the Republican presidential nomination. Pence has struggled to gain traction and raise money for his campaign. “We always knew this would be an uphill battle, but I have no regrets,” Pence told a crowd at the Republican Jewish Convention in Las Vegas. With the Iowa caucus coming up in January, Pence saved himself from any uncertainty about his political standing.
Pence’s departure from the race also comes before the November 8th Republican debate in Miami. To participate candidates must meet the requirements of 70,000 individual donors and 4% in at least two national polls. While Pence’s campaign did not disclose how close they are to that number, it couldn't have been that much based on the campaign’s financial report.
According to the financial report released in the second week of October, Pence only had $1.2 million in the account and was in $620,000 worth of debt.
On the campaign trail, Pence attempted to brand himself as a new man and separated himself from former President Donald Trump, which proved almost impossible. Trump has a significant lead in the race for the Republican nomination. In a statement released on his campaign website, Pence thanked his supporters, family, and God for the opportunity to run. “The only thing harder than coming up short would have been to have never tried at all.”
